Interesting Times for Bernan

MISHAP NO. 3

On Saturday May 23, the Bernan 39' Mainship trawler encountered a submerged log about 12 miles from our destination at the Gangplank Marina in downtown Washington DC.  The log hit the prop with a loud twang and dislodged the packing gland on the prop shaft and started leaking excessively.  Bernie adjusted the packing gland "on the fly" and stopped the leak temporarily.
After several repeat adjustments, they arrived at the slip safely with unknown damage below.

Because of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the earliest available diver and mechanic was today.  The diver confirmed no damage to prop, cutlass bearing and shaft.  Without hauling Bernan out of the water, the diver needed rags and Vaseline to plug the packing gland underwater.  Unable to fine Vaseline aboard,
we had to use our Preparation H.

This worked fine and Prep H saved the day
for Bernie and Nancy.

Hardy and Annmarie leave the Fairfield Fleet
today for more adventures as they head North.

Report by
Marcia
Flash!  There was a ten foot long alligator swimming in Alligator Marina waters 2 weeks ago!  Miss Wanda has pictures on the restaurant wall to verify this.  The Alligator was smooth and both Marlyn and Annie Girl had an easy day getting from the Alligator Oasis to Dowry Creek Marina.  Due to a forecast of rain and winds on Tuesday, we decided not to stop in Oriental and left early Monday "heading for the barn".  We rounded Maw Point with less than one foot waves, and made it back to Fairfield by early afternoon.  Both Annie Girl and Marlyn had a safe trip and a good trip...and we wish our fellow cruisers calm seas on their return to Fairfield next week.
